For its first 12 years, the LAB Profile was an interview technique. Interviewers required a two-day training and dozens of practice interviews before being effective in gathering the LAB Profile data.

From 1993 until now, the LAB Profile has been a paper-and-pencil survey which is computer graded. Clients administer the survey and fax the completed forms to the ISC offices where the raw data is entered into the LAB Profile processing software. The output is printed on the client's FAX machine.
